Interferon alpha/ribavirin is the current treatment for Hepatitis C. It is effective in less than 50% of patients and has multiple side effects. These side effects include flu like symptoms, depression, low platelet count, low white blood cell count, and low red cell count. Over 20% of patients have to stop treatment as a result of side effects. Although interferon alpha has helped tens of thousands of people, there is a need to find more effective and less toxic treatments.
